Friday's games: Lars and Marco

Lars and Marco's team continued their playoff games today, playing a team from Malta and a team from Germany. Their games were late in the day but virtually back to back with 4:55 and 7:20 starts.

The first game against the Knights from Malta was one of the roughest I've seen in a while, and after a few uncalled hard fouls, some of the Marin FC players took some liberties with their tackling tactics. Unfortunately, one such play ended in a called foul inside the box, which led to the Knights scoring on the penalty kick right before the half. Phil, the coach, gave the boys a good half-time talk and did quite a bit of encouraging and directive coaching from the side during the second half, and though the boys had a couple good shots on goal--one of which I am certainly broke the plane--they did not score, and so the game ended in a 0-1 loss. Here are a couple photos from that game:

The second game was against a German team whose players were quite fast and very attacking-minded. Marin FC played hard, and Marco and Lars both played well in this game. We scored twice, but both goals were called off sides by the lone referee. I am positive the first was not offsides, but I didn't see the second clearly. The Germans scored once on a beautiful shot from the right and won the game. Final score: 0-1. The German team ended up winning the semifinal round and will play the final tomorrow.

After Lars and Marco finished playing, Norman invited them to join the Lions Girls for dinner.  They both ordered monstrous slurpies.

Overall, the Dana Cup has been a blast! Tomorrow is a free day before heading to Sweden on Sunday. The Lions Girls' plan is to take the train up to Skagen after lunch and eat dinner up there; Mattias is taking all of the Marin FC teams to Skagen as well, though I'm not sure whether we'll see Lars and Marco there as they have been hanging out with their teammates.

More tomorrow!

Go Lions!
